We have been working on seed stories in writing class. Joseph created this beautiful illustration to show that a topic can be like a watermelon– a large, juicy fruit containing many small seeds. Each seed is a potential story.

For example, a watermelon topic might be “My dog, Rex”. A seed story idea about Rex could be “The day Rex jumped out of the back of the pickup truck at a red light”. (This was Mrs. Vogel’s dog).

Once students decided on a seed idea, they shared it with a partner. They wrote down important details to include and practiced verbally telling the story. Then they were ready to write the stories in their writer’s journals. We did this in class yesterday. Many wonderful, exciting stories were written! There will be opportunities to share these in class next week.

Parents, ask your child to tell you their seed story!
